Welcome
The Women Lawyers Association of the ACT Inc (WLA ACT) is a not-for-profit organisation providing networking for and promotion of the interests of women lawyers in the ACT.
The objects of WLA ACT are to:
- promote knowledge of, and access to, the law and legal services;
- provide a forum for the exchange of information and opinions on aspects of the law and its practice among women and men concerned in, affected by, or interested in the law and its practice;
- publish, and encourage the publication of papers, articles and commentaries about the law;
- promote lectures, seminars and conferences about the law;
- co-operate with academic institutions and with the other persons interested in the law in promoting the objects mentioned above; and
- make and disseminate reports commentaries and submissions in furtherance of the above-mentioned objects.
Recent research data shows that women are not represented equally in senior positions in private practice, or in appointments to judicial office, in spite of the fact that women have been graduating from law schools in numbers equal to or more than numbers for men for more than 20 years. As a contributing member of Australian Women Lawyers, WLA ACT is active across a range of local and national issues including providing advice to Governments on the appointment of suitable women candidates for appointment to judicial office as well as making policy input to the Australian Government through our membership of Australian Women Lawyers. Further, the WLA ACT has a strong networking focus and hosts various events throughout the year for members.
Our patron is Justice Hilary Penfold of the Supreme Court of the ACT.
